OVERVIEW OF KUWAIT FOCAL POINT

The Kuwait National Focal Point for Environmental Remediation (KNFP) was established in September 2006 to oversee and coordinate the planning and implementation of the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program (KERP) and to serve as liaison between the State of Kuwait and the United Nations on the KERP.

Funded from awards of the F4 Panels of the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC), the KERP is made up of environmental remediation, and rehabilitation, projects subject of the Follow up Program for Environmental Awards of the UNCC.

The KERP projects are implemented by different entities of the State of Kuwait, under the oversight of KNFP, which liaises with the Government and the UN on their progress.

OVERVIEW OF KUWAIT FOCAL POINT

In accordance with United Nations Committee Decision No. (258), which mandated environmentally affected countries to establish a Focal Point to act as a liaison between project-implementing entities and the United Nations Committee, the Kuwaiti Council of Ministers issued Decision No. (564) in 2006, later amended by Decision No. (479) in April 2017, to outline the mechanism for dealing with environmental remediation projects.

These projects are implemented by the responsible entities, as they fall within their jurisdiction or operational areas.

Kuwait National Focal Point is tasked with coordinating and monitoring the implementation of approved plans and supervising the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Projects (KERP). It also submits annual reports to the “Middle East Division, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs” at the United Nations Security Council in New York.
